PurrView #3 - Motorcycle Stunt Riding

(Trick Skilz - Jacksonville, FL)
Stunt Riding...
"...is a motorcycle sport characterized by stunts involving acrobatic maneuvering of the motorcycle and sometimes the rider." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stunt_riding).
You may have seen them here and there... lurking in alleyways, behind warehouses in urban areas, practicing along lonely country roads, or suddenly popping a wheelie next to you on the roadway or highway at speeds that make you personally fear for their safety. Or perhaps you've only noticed their remnants strewn across a parking lot in the form of circular tire tracks, leaving a trail that appears to have been left by a rubber tornado. The single-lined marks indicative that STUNTRIDERS were there.

Riders from as early as World War II have been able to do basic motorcycle tricks and pop wheelies with exhibition in mind. A particular rider in the 1970s set a record with a roughly 145 mile continuous wheelie! Even with this rather rich history, the sport of Stunt Riding is not quite the most popular extreme sport. It really started picking up popularity in the 1990s. With all due respect, we're not talking leaps and bounds like Evil Knievel (R.I.P). We're talking bad ass, short-ranged tricks.

Stunt Riding has relatively low participation levels in comparison to other extreme sports. It is definitely a show-off sport; a mature and more extreme talent show that has been made possible by the progressively lighter design of these street machines, as well as better and more responsive braking mechanisms.

This sport is characterized by tricks such as Stoppies, Wheelies, Endos, Highchairs, or 12:00 wheelies/12-stands, and burnouts. It truly is exhilarating and entertaining to watch these "stunters" perform their maneuvers-- mostly solo-- on or directly near the bike, but occasionally with a tandem female rider who participates by riding along and joining in on the acrobatics of a given routine. Or, (as shown above) some riders do routines in collaboration with each other. From coast to coast, the sport has attained recognition and notariety as an extreme sport; which I'm sure 9 out of 10 ladies would agree is hot!, while non-stunting guys either watch on in admiration or trash-talk out of jealousy.

If you've searched high and low for the "stunters," and just can't seem to find their "spots," or are now just plain curious, there are a few ways you can satisfy your curiosity. Much like those who participate in other extreme sports compile "skate videos" or "snowboarding videos," stunters have "stunt videos" in their world. You can find these on websites like http://www.stuntlife.com/ or http://www.bikerpunks.com/. You can also hop on YouTube and find clips and videos of pros and amateurs in the sport. Try searching, for example, "XDL," which is a premier stunt bike competition held in various nationwide locations.

I've personally been a spectator of the Stunt Riding scene since 2006. I've had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with pros like Kane Friesen (http://youtu.be/Sw6o935-oA0) and also the privilege of catching masters like A.C. Farias (http://youtu.be/Bmx7yfeyV9U).  One of the best times in my life was when I first moved to Las Vegas; my old roomie and brother-from-another-mother, Trick Skilz (Jacksonville, FL stunt rider) really introduced me to the riding and stunt riding world. So I must say that even aside from the fact that this sport is extremely sick in a good way, I have a soft, nostalgic spot for you STUNTERS!

PurrView #2 - Crystal Castles

Crystal Castles....
Yet another band that makes me think to myself time and time again, "...Am I gonna have to move to Canada to hear the best tunes sooner?" Some fabulous, fresh acts have emerged from the great land to our North in recent years (i.e. Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Metric...). Despite the fact that we are directly below the great nation of Canada, the trickle effect seems to trickle from Canada all the way over to the UK and other parts of Europe first, then it trickles its way into the waters of the U.S.  I guess I point out this fact merely because I wonder what took me so long to discover Crystal Castles!

Crystal Castles is a duo from Toronto comprised of Ethan Kath as producer and the beautiful Alice Glass, vocalist. Her electric eyes seem to go hand in hand with her hypnotic vocals, commonly trademarked by distortion/lo-fi sounds as well as a champion scream indicating definite punk/metal roots.  The warped sound that producer Ethan Kath pumps out is tantalizingly electronic and marked by thumping bass and, at times, old "Nintendo-ish" sound clips. As playful as this might sound, the final product brings a much-needed grime; a darker alter ego to this genre; for example, check out"Alice Practice" and "Untrust Us".
They've played far and wide at events such as Coachella, Bonnaroo, and other European festivals, as well as touring for a minute or two with NIN, and just recently they blew up the spot at Ultra Music Festival in Miami for yet another year. Crystal Castles' track "Not in Love" features, none other than our dark friend himself, Robert Smith of The Cure.

"Crimewave" was the first Crystal Castles track that I checked out. There's nothin' like a band that plays under freeway overpasses. I'm sure Crystal Castles would understandingly approve if I were to simply sum their sound up as "just dope". PS - These tracks are great to hear while running.

PurrView #1

Welcome to PurrView: Music, Art, Eclecticism...

My goal with this blog is to utilize the web to channel my thoughts, observations, reviews, and opinions on all things Music, Art, Entertainment, et cetera, that I behold and find fascinating or noteworthy....

I am a 27 year old woman from Viva Las Vegas, Nevada and I hope to one day be considered one of the most influential writers and/or journalists this side of the Mississippi and beyond!

"PurrView" is a play on words (, as I tend to be a playful person.... when I'm not being a stone-cold bad ass, that is ;). It is a play on the word "Purview", which is defined by Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary as: " range of vision, understanding, or cognizance".
Personally, it seemed an appropriate title for the scope of my focus; in exploring aspects of "the scene" relating to things such as music, art, events, fashion and so forth as it relates to me and my generation. That extra "R" in the word seemed only befitting...

"PurrView: Music, Art, Eclecticism..." is my first go at blogging, as I'm emerging from the Stone(d) Age and moving into the Tech Age with the rest of humanity...

Happy blogging from PurrView!.... Meow....
